چکیده

In this paper a new approach is presented based on evolutionary polynomial regression (EPR) for modelling of soil–water characteristic curve in unsaturated soils. EPR is an evolutionary data mining technique that generates a transparent and structured representation of the behaviour of a system directly from data. This method can operate on large quantities of data in order to capture nonlinear and complex relationships between variables of the system. It also has the additional advantage that it allows the user to gain insight into the behaviour of the system. Results from pressure plate tests carried out on clay, silty clay, sandy loam, and loam are used for developing and validating the EPR model. The model inputs are the initial void ratio, initial gravimetric water content, logarithm of suction normalised with respect to atmospheric air pressure, clay content, and silt content. The model output is the gravimetric water content corresponding to the assigned input suction. The EPR model predictions are compared with the experimental results as well as the models proposed by previous researches. The results show that the proposed approach is very effective and robust in modelling the soil–water characteristic curve in unsaturated soils. The merits and advantages of the proposed approach are highlighted. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Estimation of Water Retention Curve for Unsaturated Fine Soils

In order to obtain the soil water retention curve of an unsaturated soil which is defined as the relationship between water content and suction, extensive laboratory tests are essential. These laboratory tests are usually costly and time consuming. Moreover, for most practical problems, it has been found that approximate unsaturated soil properties are adequate for analysis. Thus, empirical pro...

تخمین منحنی مشخصه رطوبتی و هدایت هیدرولیکی غیراشباع خاک در تراکم‌های

Hydraulic conductivity is an important parameter in the design of geotechnical structures such as earth dam, floor construction, retaining walls and environmental structures. In unsaturated soils, hydraulic conductivity is a function of moisture content and soil water suction i.e. soil moisture characteristic curve. In this study, the values of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity in two soil typ...

Evaluation of PTFs Developed From Large Databases for Iranian Soils To Predict SMRC

The majority of hydraulic processes under a natural condition in a field are carried out under unsaturated flow conditions. The soil moisture retention curve (SMRC) is the most important hydraulic characteristic of an unsaturated soil whose knowledge is of prime importance in soil-water studies such as soil conservation, soil erosion, land evaluation, soil reclamation, and water resources manag...

ارزیابی توابع انتقالی پارامتریک برای تخمین منحنی مشخصه آب خاک در استان فارس

Soil water characteristic curve shows the relationship between soil water content and matric suction, which has an important role in water movement in the soil. The measurement of this curve is expensive and time-consuming in laboratory therefore, many methods have been proposed for its estimation including pedotransfer functions. By using the pedotransfer functions, soil water characteristic c...

Numerical Solution for Heave of Expansive Soils

A numerical solution for heave prediction is developed within the context theories for both saturated and unsaturated soil behaviors. Basically, lowering the potential level of compressing on a saturated layer will cause heaving due to water absorption. This water absorption is in an opposite way, similar to water dissipation as what happens during unloading in consolidation process. However, i...
